JAK2 POSITIVE. Platelets elevated evidently since Sept. 1999. Highest platelet count known is 987,000, with most recent count being 900,000. I started taking
anagrelide in early October, but local hematologist sent me to Emory in Atlanta, GA about 2 weeks later for a second opinion. My ankle had been swollen and
red (sometimes purplish) and sometimes painful off an on for a good while. He was concerned about what was causing it. Doctor at Emory said he would not have
put me on Anagrelide - that his first treatment would have been aspirin. He said the ankle problem was "Atypical Erythromelalgia". The aspirin
controlled the swelling quickly. He also told me that I have Polycythemia Vera instead of ET, which came as no surprise since I had been watching my
hematocrit and had thought for a while that it was looking more like PV than ET. He said his suggested treatment for the time being would be Phlebotomies (to
get the hematocrit down to 42) and low dose aspirin. I stopped taking Anagrelide the end of October. My platelets had been running in the 800,000 range, but
jumped to 900,000 after being off Anagrelide for a couple of weeks. I will be 58 later this month. Updated 11/18/09.
